So often in our society if a man sleeps with multiple women he’s a :player, pimp, ladies man…well you see where this is going. Think long and hard and tell me the last time you heard a sex-positive word for a woman? I’ll wait……didn’t think so. It made me sad to realize that the only words I could think of were the usual: slut, whore, skank, prostitute…again you see where this list is going. The question I’ve always asked is, why is it when a man sleeps with multiple consenting partners he’s a god deserving to be put on a pedestal and it’s expected of him because, well, he’s a man? Yet a self-aware woman, who enjoys sex and happily choses her partner is labeled a whore?
My experience at SlutWalk this weekend has reaffirmed something for me, and taught me another. It reaffirmed that the victim is NEVER to blame in an assault or rape, and it taught me that women aren’t the only ones to be victimized. We live in a society where the victim is more often than not blamed for the attack because they were dressed provocatively, drunk, or not in their gender assigned wardrobe.
I’m thankful that the asshat cop in Toronto decided to show his ignorance publicly, it gave someone the spark that was needed to start a fire. This fire is spreading quickly, not just throughout our country but throughout the world. With SlutWalks sprouting up through Canada, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, here in Dallas, San Francisco, and as far as the United Kingdom, and New Zealand a statement is being made. A cry is going up through the world that the clothes don’t make the victim rapists do, no is still no regardless of how someone is dressed, and victim blaming, and slut shaming must end.
After my experience yesterday, I had just one sex positive word for women. It’s only one, but it’s a start: consenting
